Welcome to the podcast for techintervide.guide. I‘ve been in the tech industry for over 25 years and have spent more than a decade in management and leadership roles involved in the interview process at many organizations. I‘ve helped people get jobs at all kinds of companies, from small startups to FAANG organizations. I live stream career coaching and interview preparation advice for people in the tech industry who are looking for their first, or next, technical job . This podcast is made up of Q&A / AMA sessions that I host a few times each month. I talk about behavioral questions, technical concepts, industry trends in interviewing, and what kinds of things are important when answering questions. You can check out https://techinterview.guide/streaming for more information about live streaming events coming up. You‘re welcome to contact me through the web site or LinkedIn if you have a question you would like answered, or -- better yet -- drop by the live stream on Twitch to ask in real-time. I‘m always open to feedback, and look forward to helping you!

How do you approach recruiters, and others, at a company?
Thursday Jul 07, 2022

I recommend reaching out to 3 or 4 people at every company, including recruiters and managers. Having specific questions to ask them is important, and will tell you a lot about the company, and will aid you in your company research to know if you even want to apply for a job there.

Since it takes companies a little bit of time to look at your application, is it better to apply for the job first, and then spend time cleaning up GitHub, LinkedIn, etc,, or should you do that work first?

Researching a company is pretty important so you know what your expectations are for the workplace, company culture, and so on. It'll be important to check out my other podcast audio and youtube videos about how to do company research, so you're well informed. You can also use this research to come up with questions to ask while networking with people before you even apply for a job.

The question we're addressing here is about a company who paused a candidate's interview process. Without explanation about why they had an extended silence, the company reached out to resume the interviews with the candidate as if nothing happened. The person asking the question was rightfully confused, and asked my opinion.

How to prepare for a phone screen when you don’t know if it will be technical or not
Saturday Jul 02, 2022
Saturday Jul 02, 2022
A Twitch user asked how to prepare for a meeting with a "manager". Should they be prepared to speak about technical topics and project work, or to answer behavioral questions, or just talk about the interview process and salary? All of the above? Something else entirely?

A discord user sent in a question saying a recruiter contacted them after an interview saying they would "love" to call to give them some feedback, asking how they should interpret that message. If they use overly-positive wording, that's probably a good sign.

Your project portfolio says a lot about you as a developer, and some projects will stand out more than others. There's a balance to strike between working on "passion" projects that you care a lot about, and working on projects that will get noticed by companies as you're applying for jobs.

Is it possible to get an internship job if I’m only in my 2nd year of university?
Wednesday Jun 29, 2022
Wednesday Jun 29, 2022
A Twitch user asked whether being in the second of four years of university is enough knowledge to start applying for internship roles. While you do have some amount of knowledge, and companies will treat internships as learning opportunities anyway, they'll still want to see how you'll contribute to their team. Here's how to stand out to improve your chances.
