Welcome to the podcast for techintervide.guide. I‘ve been in the tech industry for over 25 years and have spent more than a decade in management and leadership roles involved in the interview process at many organizations. I‘ve helped people get jobs at all kinds of companies, from small startups to FAANG organizations. I live stream career coaching and interview preparation advice for people in the tech industry who are looking for their first, or next, technical job . This podcast is made up of Q&A / AMA sessions that I host a few times each month. I talk about behavioral questions, technical concepts, industry trends in interviewing, and what kinds of things are important when answering questions. You can check out https://techinterview.guide/streaming for more information about live streaming events coming up. You‘re welcome to contact me through the web site or LinkedIn if you have a question you would like answered, or -- better yet -- drop by the live stream on Twitch to ask in real-time. I‘m always open to feedback, and look forward to helping you!

I want to get a data-entry job where I can work from home. Are those legit, or a scam?
Wednesday Jul 27, 2022

This question really set a theme for most of the live stream tonight, about doing your own "due diligence" and looking for reviews (good AND bad), and asking others for help in research. Whether it's a potential job like a data-entry position, or a company where you want full-time work, or even a school to learn about development. There are scams out there, certainly, but there are lots of good companies and schools doing this in a legitimate way. I can't help you research them all but I do offer some ideas here.

I was asked in chat if I had heard of CodePath.org and whether their 12-week interview preparation course would be worthwhile to prepare for technical challenges. My YouTube videos about leetcode will help you, too; go check those out!

How do I turn down a company’s offer without ”burning a bridge”?
Monday Jul 25, 2022
Monday Jul 25, 2022
A follower on Twitch got two job offers (first off, YAY!!), and wanted to know how they should word their communication to the company whose job offer they would not be taking. It can feel great when you have multiple job offers, but you also want to maintain a good reputation. You have to say no to all but one of those offers. You can do this with grace and style, and it's extremely rare that you would "burn a bridge" in the tech industry unless you're a massive jerk about it. And you're not gonna do that, are ya?!

A user on the livestream asked where to find compensation data for smaller businesses, not just FAANG companies, and that led to a deeper discussion on compensation, and the differences between being a freelancer and an employee, taxes, etc.. I also got a little sidetracked with the 3D printed giveaway from May 2022.

Another great question from our Discord community. In this case, they were asked to describe their "biggest technical problem", but they felt they hadn't really had any yet. Is that a sign that your job was too perfect? too careful? Or just too boring because you didn't have any major problems? What if there was another way to learn the same things as those challenges, without the pressure of doing it on the job?

At what point in a developer’s career could you qualify for a CTO role?
Friday Jul 22, 2022
Friday Jul 22, 2022
I was asked in chat how someone could position themselves to get into an eventual CTO role. They had plenty of work experience in areas that would qualify them for a CTO type of role within a smaller company, like a small startup. But larger companies will typically hire people with lots of experience in that kind of role already and less likely to promote someone into that level.

I get it. We HAVE to demonstrate our skill in the technical interviews. But SOOO many companies get it WRONG during the interview stage by asking us to recall algorithms that have NOTHING to do with our day to day jobs. How can get them to change? And what do we do in the meantime?

I was asked in chat if I found myself procrastinating during my December 2021 and January 2022. At that point, my full-time job was finding a new full-time job, and I maximized every moment I could with perparation and interviews -- save for a little time with the family over the holidays.

Should I also study system design for entry-level development roles?
Tuesday Jul 19, 2022
Tuesday Jul 19, 2022
A user asked a great quesiton in chat tonight about studying system design. A company suggested they do some study on the topic, but the person was confused and wondered if only senior-level developers had to worry about that sort of thing. Certinaly, a senior-level dev will have much more intricate knowledge about system design, but even entry-level developers can learn the basics by looking to the late, great Bob Ross. Yes, the painter with the afro and the happy little trees.

A user on Twitch asked for recommendations on how to get started learning software development to get into the tech industry. There are lots of good resources out there with structured curriculum, but you do need to have dedicated time to learn and study and build projects.
