Welcome to the podcast for techintervide.guide. I‘ve been in the tech industry for over 25 years and have spent more than a decade in management and leadership roles involved in the interview process at many organizations. I‘ve helped people get jobs at all kinds of companies, from small startups to FAANG organizations. I live stream career coaching and interview preparation advice for people in the tech industry who are looking for their first, or next, technical job . This podcast is made up of Q&A / AMA sessions that I host a few times each month. I talk about behavioral questions, technical concepts, industry trends in interviewing, and what kinds of things are important when answering questions. You can check out https://techinterview.guide/streaming for more information about live streaming events coming up. You‘re welcome to contact me through the web site or LinkedIn if you have a question you would like answered, or -- better yet -- drop by the live stream on Twitch to ask in real-time. I‘m always open to feedback, and look forward to helping you!

A user in chat shared an experience about how they rebuilt something at work to better understand how a system worked. While not every team or organization has the time for this, it's a wonderful learning experience and I shared a few thoughts as well.

A user on the live stream today asked about how to discuss the balance between technical skill and user empathy in an interview. Every role will impact the user in some way, but some roles are more "visible" to users, like front-end development. What's the best way to discuss all of this in an interview?

Someone asked for advice on how to answer technical questions when they were a self-taught developer without any technical experience. They weren't sure they would ever feel prepared enough. I offered some insight, and shared some tips on what to study.

As a tech manager, how do you keep your team engaged?

A question was dropped in chat today which sounded like an excellent "behavioral" question for an engineering manager about how they keep their team members engaged and how to spot problems. Open communication is key, and your job as a manager is to remove barriers to getting work done. Here are some thoughts based on my time as a technical manager.

Someone in chat asked about how to talk to recruiters who have an expectation of "years" of experience for positions, when the person in chat was new to the industry. How do they position themselves to still show relevancy and experience. Does project work count towards experience?

Employers LOVE people who come from the service industry -- the team work and communication is excellent, as are your problem solving skills and customer-first mindset. A person in chat today asked how they should build a resume for the tech industry when this was the only professional experience they had to draw from.

I was asked how to handle a job offer scenario. They wondered about an appopriate amount of time to review it, or were there built-in expirations, and if so how to handle that. I cover everything from stall tactics to how to word messages to the company who extended the offer as well as how to message other companies where you're still interviewing.

A question from our Discord community asked about how to address questions that may come up in interviews about short duration jobs. In this example, if you've worked at a job for 6 months or less, how do you discuss that with the company? It comes down to practicing why you left the company, and knowing what NOT to say.

My hot take: is project-based learning considered professional experience?
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
Thursday Jul 28, 2022
We covered this in several parts of the live stream, but this one was the most clippable. Folks were asking whether listing a school as professional experience was a misrepresentation, and that led down a rabbit hole here. If, as a student, you're building a project using all of the same tools as a professional developer, including deployment, CI/CD, is that considered "professional" experience?
